For any Aussie history buffs – add The Dig Tree to your itinerary. Located on Nappa Merrie Station coincidentally owned by other local Gundy family – it is amazing to read the story of the Burke and Wills expedition especially along the Cooper Creek.
William Wills was the surveyor who along with Robert Burke attempted to cross Australia from Victoria to the Cape. Wills was responsible for surveying the land, observing and recording data, which he noted in multiple notebooks from day two until just before he died during the doomed expedition, in June 1861, aged just 27.
His field work was all with a Gunter’s chain no doubt and no air-conditioned ute to take a break…Jeff is thanking his lucky stars for the invention of GPS, Drones….and Starlink!
